Support for PDA
Support With Pathological Demand Avoidance
Some individuals experience a strong need to avoid everyday demands, particularly when feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or under pressure. This may present as resistance, distress, or withdrawal in daily situations at home, school, or work. This presentation is often understood as a demand-avoidant profile within autism (sometimes referred to as PDA).
At RKA, we provide structured, practical support to help individuals and families better understand and respond to these patterns.
How We Support
We offer tailored, low-demand strategies to reduce anxiety and improve engagement:
- Understanding demand avoidance and underlying anxiety
- Reducing everyday demands and environmental pressure
- Adapting communication to support cooperation
- Supporting flexibility through collaborative approaches
- Reducing conflict at home, school, or work
- Developing regulation strategies to manage overwhelm
Our approach is relationship-based, low-demand, and individualised, focusing on reducing distress and supporting more positive day-to-day experiences.
Support for Parents and Caregivers
We work closely with parents to:
- Understand demand-avoidant behaviours
- Reduce conflict and escalation
- Respond in calm, effective ways
- Create a more manageable and supportive home environment
